State Enterprises Minister Dahlan Iskan was involved in a serious car accident in Tawangmangu, Central Java, on Saturday.
Dahlan was driving his new electric car, a Tucuxi, from Solo, Central Java, to Surabaya, East Java, when the car hit a mountain side and then a utility pole after its brakes malfunctioned.
A spokesman for the State Enterprise, Ministry Faisal Halimi, said that the car was working perfectly when driving up a steep ascent in Tawang Mangu and Cemoro Sewu. However, when the vehicle had to make a sharp downward climb in Sarangan, its brakes gave out.
Dahlan veered sharply to his right to avoid crashing into other vehicles, but hit a mountain side instead. He was reportedly driving 60 to 80 km/hour at the time of the incident.
"From Tawangmangu, [there was] a steep descent. We are now in Magetan [but] the car is still there. The car is wrecked," he added.
According to reports by news portal merdeka.com, the roof and windshield were smashed.
Dahlan and the creator of the electric car, Riki Nelson, who was in the passenger seat, escaped the accident unharmed.
"Pak Dahlan is safe. So is Riki. No one's injured," Faisal said.
Purportedly, Dahlan wanted to show off his car and was attempting to drive 1,000 kilometers, the first long distance test-drive for the vehicle.
The Indonesian-made electric car can be driven for four hours without requiring a recharge, and can reach speeds of up to 200 km/hour.
Initial reports revealed that 100 cars will be produced for the public by March of this year at a price of Rp 1.5 billion ($155,000) per unit.
