Honda CBR600RR Juara World Supersport Championship

Post by Crash »

World Supersport 2004 - Round 9 - Imola - Race Report
September 26th, 2004

Karl Muggeridge took his eighth pole from nine rounds at Imola this weekend and only needs to finish in front of Jurgen Vd Goorbergh or fourth position to secure the championship here at Imola today with one round still remaining. All four riders on the front row today are Australian, Muggeridge, Parkes, Curtain and Pitt. Craig Coxhell is having a guest ride with Yamaha Motor Germany this weekend and could only manage on 20th on the grid.

Muggeridge got away well and led Kevin Curtain through the first turns with Broc Parkes in third and Lorenzo Lanzi in fourth and Andrew Pitt in fifth. Championship contender Jurgen Vd Goorbergh was down in tenth place.

Muggas started to pull a couple of lengths on Curtain before Broc Parkes then pushed Curtain back to third after backing it in under Curtain in an amazing pass into a tight left hander and somehow managed to not drift wide and not only held the position but immediately started pulling away from Curtain and pulled three or four bike lengths over Curtain through the next couple of corners to close onto the tail of his team-mate and championship leader Karl Muggeridge and set the fastest lap of the race thus far on that third circuit of the track. Pitt was running well in fifth and was challenging for fourth until he did a little bit of grass tracking and lost a couple of places as a result.

The two Ten Kate men were setting a cracking pace that Kevin Curtain was struggling to stay with and Curtain ended in the kitty litter while trying to give chase to the two Honda men. Curtain's demise meant that after only five laps the Ten Kate boys had six seconds over the now third placed Sebastien Charpentier who had got the better of Lorenzo Lanzi for that position.

Broc Parkes then locked the front under brakes which meant he had to momentarily release the anchors before getting straight back on and then slid wildly into the turn and for a second I thought he was going to t-bone his team-mate Karl Muggeridge but he got it under control and turned into the turn and I just managed to avoid having a coronary.

Parkes trying as hard as ever and laying big darkies off the turns on his CBR600RR and with these two front runners riding so close together and so on the edge it would be enough for the Ten Kate boys to have to go and sit in the back room and not watch thus they also risk having a coronary.

As they passed the halfway mark the Ten Kate pair had nearly ten seconds on Charpentier who in turn had a few bike lengths on Lanzi who was starting to come under attack from Foret and Pitt. A lap later Jurgen Vd Goorbergh went off into the kitty litter effectively handing the 2004 World Supersport Championship to Karl Muggeridge. A well deserved gong for the likeable Queenslander.

Vd Goorbergh's demise also enhances the chances of Broc Parkes being able to overcome Vd Goorbergh for second place in the championship after entering this round 24 points behind the Dutchman.

In the final laps Parkes lost a fair bit of ground on Muggeridge maybe through backing off to ensure his points gain on Vd Goorbergh looking towards that second place in the championship if he can score a good result at the Magny Cours final round next weekend.

Craig Coxhell brought home 12th place in his guest ride with Yamaha Germany. Perhaps not as high as a position as he had hoped but three positions and more than four seconds in front of regular Yamaha Germany pilot and previous top World Supersport runner Christian Kellner. Coxhell will be looking to improve that result next weekend at Magny Cours to try and secure a place in that squad for 2005. He will also be happy that he managed to go quicker in the race than he had managed in qualifying, one of only four riders to do so.

Karl Muggeridge celebrated his race and championship win with a series of burnouts and monos before being soaked in champagne on the podium. Muggeridge will move up to the Superbike class in 2005 and will stay with Ten Kate to join Chris Vermeulen as the pair make an assault on the 2005 World Superbike Championship onboard Ten Kate prepared CBR1000RR Fireblades.
